The International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG), the Commission on Geoethics of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS-CG), and the Chair on Geoethics of the International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences (CIPSH-CG) strongly support the inaugural AI in the Geosciences conference.
This hybrid event is organized by the Geological Society of London (GSL) and will take place at the GSL’s Burlington House, Piccadilly, London, and online, on 4-5 June 2026.
Among the conference conveners are Silvia Peppoloni (IAPG President, Chair of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics, and Chairholder of the CIPSH Chair on Geoethics), Paul Cleverly (Chair of the Task Group on AI in Geosciences of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics), and Giuseppe Di Capua (IAPG Secretary General and Treasurer of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics).
The inaugural AI in the Geosciences conference is a new hybrid event aimed at researchers, industry professionals, students, policy makers, and all those with an interest in responsible innovation. The meeting will explore how artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data are transforming the geosciences, while also addressing the critical ethical, educational, and policy challenges that come with these technologies.
The programme is designed to encourage contributions from a wide range of stakeholders, combining traditional scientific presentations with community updates, hosted panel discussions and workshops The meeting will showcase cutting-edge AI-based tools, illustrating how the community can derive benefit from their application to real geoscience problems. The event will also provide a network for professional development and opportunities for collaboration across disciplines.
Key themes of the conference are as follows:
Theme 1 - Developments and opportunities within AI and machine learning
Theme 2 - Data integration, interpretation and automation using AI tools
Theme 3 - Open data and collaborative development of AI tools
Theme 4 - Considering ethics, bias and transparency in implementing AI and machine learning
Theme 5 - Policy considerations for future AI development
Theme 6 - Importance / use of AI in geoscience education
