The Geoethics Medal honors scientists and scholars who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to ethical practices in geoscience research and/or practice, as well as its interdisciplinary applications. The award highlights the importance of responsible and ethical behavior in geosciences and encourages others to integrate geoethical principles into their work.

During a ceremony held at Burlington House in London on 17 June 2026, as part of the Geological Society of London's annual President's Day celebrations, Silvia Peppoloni received the 2026 Distinguished Service Award in recognition of her outstanding international leadership and her unwavering commitment to advancing and promoting geoethics worldwide.

This year, we celebrate the 10th edition of the International Geoethics Day, which will take place on 15 October 2026. The annual theme for this edition is: "Bridging Disciplines, Connecting Responsibilities".

The International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG) is a supporting organization of the 38th International Geological Congress (IGC). The call for sessions, workshops, and short courses under the theme "Geoethics" is open (deadline: March 2027)

In 2026, Italy and the Franciscan community are experiencing a moment of exceptional significance: the eight-hundredth anniversary of the death of Saint Francis (1181/1182–1226; fig. 1). As highlighted by the INGVambiente Blog (in Italian), this anniversary is known as the Centenary of the Transit and marks the conclusion of the three-year period of commemorations that began in 2023 to honour the most important milestones in the life of the Saint.

As part of the Inspiring Girls project promoted by ValoreD, Silvia Peppoloni, geologist at INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy), has been invited as a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) role model to meet primary school students at the Deutsche Schule Rom on the occasion of Earth Day 2026 (22 April).

We are pleased to announce the establishment of the Geoethics Working Group (GWG) of the European Geosciences Union (EGU). Silvia Peppoloni will serve as Chair. The Working Group includes David Crookall, Giuseppe Di Capua, Jens Klump, and Ioanna Triantafyllou.

We would like to inform you about the Session on Geoethics (8 oral presentations) at the 78th Turkish Geological Congress, one of Turkey’s oldest scientific events. The congress will be held in Ankara from 13 to 17 April 2026.

This report provides an overview of the structure and organizational framework of the International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG), as well as its interactions and collaborations with national and international organizations and projects. It presents the main products developed since the foundation of the IAPG, highlights the principal accomplishments achieved during 2025, and outlines the planned activities and objectives for 2026.

Only a few days remain to submit an abstract to the Geoethics session at the European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2026 (EGU26). The deadline is quickly approaching. if you would like to contribute, please carefully read the instructions on how to prepare and submit your abstract.

The deadline for submitting nominations for the Geoethics Medal 2025 is fast approaching: 31 December 2025. The Geoethics Medal honors scientists and scholars who have demonstrated exceptional commitment to ethical practices in geoscience research and/or practice, including its interdisciplinary applications. The award emphasizes the importance of responsible and ethical conduct in the geosciences and encourages others to incorporate geoethical principles into their work.

This session aims to explore, through case studies and discussion, how geoethics can shape responsible behaviors and policies in geosciences. We welcome theoretical, methodological, and applied contributions addressing a broad range of topics related to geoethics and social geosciences

A workshop entitled "The Practice of Geoethics and Its Importance in the Geosciences" is currently being held in Lima, Peru.
