A message from IAPG President, Silvia Peppoloni, on the occasion of International Geoethics Day 2026
Dear colleagues and friends,
Today, 15 October 2026, we have celebrated the tenth International Geoethics Day, dedicated to the theme “Bridging Disciplines, Connecting Responsibilities.”
This anniversary invites us to reflect on the role of geoethics and on our shared responsibility to study, communicate and care for the Earth system.
The challenges we face—from climate change and natural hazards to resource sustainability and ecosystem protection—are complex and interconnected. They cannot be fully understood or addressed through a single discipline. The geosciences provide essential knowledge of the Earth and its processes, but this knowledge gains greater meaning through dialogue with the humanities, social sciences, education, policymaking and local communities.
Bridging disciplines means creating spaces where different forms of knowledge can meet and contribute to a deeper understanding of the issues before us. Scientific evidence is indispensable, but decisions about our planet’s future also involve social values, priorities and responsibilities.
Connecting responsibilities means recognising that the consequences of our choices are shared, even when our roles differ. Researchers, educators, institutions, decision-makers and citizens all have a part to play. We must communicate clearly, listen to communities, consider the wider impacts of our actions and support choices that promote sustainability and respect for the Earth system.
Geoethics brings these commitments into our everyday work. It calls for scientific practice that is responsible, socially aware and attentive to the needs of future generations. It also reminds us that a resilient and inclusive future depends on cooperation, trust and a willingness to learn from one another.
On this tenth International Geoethics Day, let us renew our commitment to dialogue across disciplines and to the responsibilities that connect us. Together, we can help build a future in which knowledge, care and respect for the Earth guide our decisions.
Good work, everyone!
