Video message by Silvia Peppoloni (IAPG President and Chair of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics) for the International Geoethics Day 2025:

"....Consider the highly relevant issue of critical raw materials for the energy transition. Many nations around the world are investing in new mining activities to support the green transition. But this race for resources must not and cannot come at the expense of the rights of local communities, or ecosystem balance. A geology that ignores these dimensions is no longer sufficient. We need a responsible geology, one that can set boundaries, evaluate alternatives, and actively promote truly sustainable development. [...]

The event celebrating Geoethics Day is a chance to ask ourselves how we can make our science a tool for balance with nature, for social justice and also for peace. [...]

There is no simple answer, and it will be different for each of us. But I am certain that today you will have the opportunity to engage with openness, courage, and critical thinking. Only in this way can we build a geology that is not just "for humanity" but also "with humanity" and "for the Earth"."
