As a prominent global advocate for geosciences, the IUGS operates within the framework of the International Science Council (ISC). Collaborating with esteemed partners including UNESCO and various organizations dedicated to geology, geophysics, and environmental sciences, the IUGS actively sponsors and promotes initiatives in these fields. Additionally, the union plays a pivotal role in outreach efforts, particularly in education and initiatives such as geoheritage, underscoring its commitment to fostering awareness and understanding of Earth sciences on a global scale.

The IAPG is affiliated to the IUGS from 2013. The IUGS Commission on Geoethics was established at the 78th IUGS Executive Committee meeting held in Belfast (UK) in 2023.
