We are pleased to announce that the video recording of the Great Debate held at the European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2026 in Vienna, entitled "The Ethics of Using Artificial Intelligence in the Geosciences: Opportunities and Risks", is now freely available online.
You can watch the recording at: https://meetingorganizer.copernicus.org/EGU26/session/58586#
The debate explored the ethical opportunities and challenges associated with the rapidly growing use of Artificial Intelligence in the geosciences, addressing issues such as scientific integrity, transparency, accountability, data governance, professional responsibility, and the future role of geoscientists in an AI-enabled world.
The discussion brought together expertise from the geosciences, philosophy, ethics, law, and information science, offering a multidisciplinary reflection on how AI can be developed and applied responsibly to support both scientific advancement and societal well-being.
All members of the IUGS Commission on Geoethics – Task Group on Artificial Intelligence in Geosciences—Paul Cleverley (Chair; Robert Gordon University, United Kingdom), Mrinalini Kochupillai (Hanken School of Economics, Finland), Mark Lindsay (CSIRO, Australia), and Emma Ruttkamp-Bloem (University of Pretoria, South Africa)—participated as panellists in the event together with Marine Denolle (University of Washington), which was organized by the EGU Geoethics Working Group.
The Great Debate was chaired by Alice-Agnes Gabriel (Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego), with contributions from Jens Klump (CSIRO, Austrialia; EGU Geoethics Working Group) and Giuseppe Di Capua (Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, Italy; International Association for Promoting Geoethics – IAPG, IUGS Commission on Geoethics, and EGU Geoethics Working Group), who co-convened the event.
