Geoethics: Resources, Risks, Responsibilities (lecture and panel discussion)

In celebration of International Geoethics Day 2025, the Brazilian Society of Geology (SBG - Sociedade Brasileira de Geologia) announced the public release of a lecture given by Silvia Peppoloni during the 51st Brazilian Congress of Geology, held in Belo Horizonte in October 2024. As a guest speaker, Silvia recorded her lecture and authorized its wide dissemination to the geoscientific community. Due to the importance of her lecture and in honor of International Geoethics Day 2025, the Brazilian Society of Geology organized an online event on 12 November 2025, during which Silvia Peppoloni’s lecture was rebroadcast, followed by analyses and comments (in Portuguese) from members of the SBG Geoethics Committee:
The event began with Silvia Peppoloni’s lecture, originally delivered in English and transcribed into Portuguese, lasting approximately 40 minutes. Afterwards, invited panelists provided comments on the topic and its relevance in the current context, ahead of COP30, to be held in Belém (PA) from 10 to 21 November 2025. Subsequently, the floor was opened to the participating public.
Silvia Peppoloni holds a PhD in Earth Sciences from the University of Rome “La Sapienza,” Italy. She is a Researcher at INGV - National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Rome, Italy); Chairholder of the Geoethics Chair at CIPSH - International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences; President of IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics; Chair of the Commission on Geoethics of IUGS - International Union of Geological Sciences; Director of the School of Geoethics and Natural Issues; and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Geoethics and Social Geosciences and the SpringerBriefs in Geoethics series.
