Geoethics Aotearoa New Zealand Seminar Series:

Critical Minerals and Critical Perspectives: Political Ecologies of Mining in Aotearoa and the USA


Online, 14 October 2025 (4 pm, GMT+12)


Speakers:

- Glenn Banks is a professor in geography at Massey University (New Zealand).

- Noel Vineyard is a PhD candidate at the University of Nevada, Reno (USA).


Glenn and Noel both bring expertise in human geography and the political ecologies of resource extraction. Glenn will pose the question 'can we live well with mining?', and discuss conviviality, materiality, and just transitions in relation to the mining sector in Aotearoa, and Noel will talk about his work on the changing human relationship with lithium mining projects in Nevada and Oregon.


This event is organized by the Geoethics Special Interest Group of the Geoscience Society of New Zealand/IAPG-New Zealand.
