The GSN - Geological Society of Nigeria (https://geosociety.ng/) and the IAPG signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) on 2 February 2026. This MoA was signed by Malami Uba (GSN President) and Silvia Peppoloni (IAPG President).

The aim of the memorandum of agreement (MoA) is to establish a coordinated approach, where appropriate, to promote initiatives and events that address the ethical, social, and cultural implications of geosciences, and to uphold high ethical standards in geoscience research and practice, in order to better serve both the geoscience community and society at large.  The MoA expresses a mutual desire to cooperate on a range of themes in the field of geoethics. It helps to ensure continued IAPG–GSN cooperation and coordination on issues of common interest, in particular the following:

  • Promotion of principles of ethics, research integrity, and professional deontology in geoscientific activities.

  • Identification of ethical issues, with accompanying case studies where appropriate, affecting the geoscientific community and organizations in Nigeria.

  • Co-organization of scientific events to disseminate concepts of ethics in the geosciences to both professional and research communities, with particular attention to young and early-career geoscientists.

  • Production of relevant publications and communications.

Both organizations will establish a liaison to ensure effective information flow and cooperation.

GSN agrees to support the “Cape Town Statement on Geoethics” (that contains the Geoethical Promise, an Hippocratic-like oath for geoscientists: http://www.geoethics.org/ctsg) and to be listed among the supporting organizations of the statement.

Furthermore, IAPG and GSN agree on the following:

  1. To promote joint initiatives and events in Nigeria and Africa on themes of common interest through their websites, social media, and publications;

  2. To foster cooperation in projects and activities on themes of common interest;

  3. Where appropriate, to involve GSN and IAPG respectively in each other’s publications, in scientific meetings and congresses on ethics, research integrity, professional deontology, and geoethics in geosciences organized by GSN and IAPG, and in relevant projects;

  4. To foster diversity, inclusion, and professional ethics in all activities, in order to build a culture of integrity within the geoscience community.

Finally, IAPG and GSN agree to publish their logos and links to their homepages on their respective websites.

The IAPG has 35 agreements for cooperation with other organizations/institutions.
