Seminar on Geoethics

Bozeman, MT (USA)

Montana State University

4:30 – 5:20 pm, Gaines Hall 243

Seminar "Geoethics" by David Mogk (IAPG Board of Experts)

Description: Ethics is an increasingly important component of the pre-professional training of (geo)scientists. Funding agencies (NSF, NIH) require training of graduate students in the responsible conduct of research, employers are increasingly expecting their workers to have basic training in ethics, and the public demands the highest standards of ethical conduct by scientists. Geoethics resides at the intersection of geoscience, philosophy, economics and sociology, and encompasses the values and professional standards required of geoscientists to responsibly work in the profession and in service to society. Many dimensions of geoethics will be addressed: 1) Geoethics and self (self-monitoring and self-regulating behaviors); 2) Geoethics and the Geoscience Profession (responsible conduct of research and professional behaviors); 3) Geoethics and Society (responsible interactions in communicating scientific information and uncertainty to the public); and 4) Geoethics and Earth (geoscientists' responsibilities to be good stewards of the Earth). The nature of geoscience research in the heterogeneous, dynamic and complex Earth system, and while working in challenging environments that can lead to interpersonal conflicts, opens the possibility for geoscientists to encounter all manner of ethical dilemmas. An "ethical decision-making toolkit" will be presented to help geoscientists recognize, prevent, mitigate, or act upon emerging ethical issues. A number of case studies will be presented to provide examples of the types of ethical dilemmas that might be encountered in the geoscience work environment.

ICCCI 2017

Huaraz City (Peru)

Message by Prof. José Macharé Ordoñez on the International Congress on Climate Change and its Impacts – ICCCI: "Lots of people may think that Climate Change is not likely to affect their lives or they sustaining means. Our nearby environment, resources, and activities look so stable that we can feel that the reported slow climate changes will never arrive to a breaking point that impact to our comfort. While it is known that the Earth has suffered many strong climate and environmental changes and is still here, humankind is clearly far less resilient and could be unable to face the unfriendly environment that itself is slowly creating.
We will meet in Huaraz, Péruvian Andes, 29th november to 1st december to discuss the physics of Climate Change, climate evolution through the time; issues on water supply by impacts on glaciers, in groundwater, or drift of rain zones; changes in ecosystems and lost of biodiversity, effects on human health, problems in agricultural production, and direct impacts on people and their economies. Also, we address the social capabilities of managing some predicted situactions. You are kindly invited to join us. Visit www.sgp.org.pe/iccci
