GEOETHICS AT CINAREM '17

Thanks to IAPG-Cuba, leaded by Yurisley Valdes Mariño, geoethics has been included among the topics of CINAREM '17 - IX International Conference on The Better use of Mineral Resources, that will be held from 14 to 16 November 2017 in Cuba, at the Instituto Superior Minero Metalúrgico de Moa.

The Conference is entitled "For a Sustainable Mining Development".

IAPG is partner of CINAREM '17.

IAPG-Peru organizes MINERLIMA 2017, 3rd edition of the International Exhibition of Minerals (Feria Internacional de Minerales). This is an important event for promoting geoethics and geosciences in Peru.

IAPG IS A MEMBER ORGANISATION OF THE

IAPG has become a member organisation of the ICPHS - International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences on 6 August 2017, during the ICPHS General Assembly in Liège (Belgium).

Martin Bohle​, IAPG Corresponding Citizen Scientist, represented IAPG in the ICPHS General Assembly (held at the World Humanities Conference) and gave a presentation about our Association.

 

IAPG has established a tangible, first bridge between geosciences and philosophy and human sciences. A fundamental step in our strategy to develop geoethics and to promote it worldwide.

INTERNATIONAL GEOETHICS DAY
Promoting geoethics for all, worldwide

IAPG officially launches the International Geoethics Day on 12 October 2017, during the Earth Science Week 2017.

 

The aim of the International Geoethics Day is to raise the awareness of the geoscience community and society as a whole about the importance of ethical, social and cultural aspects of geoscience knowledge, research, practice, education and communication.

The International Geoethics Day will be celebrated every year during the Earth Science Week.

IAPG works for a respectful stewardship of the Earth: our way to take care of future generations.

IAH SUPPORTS THE CAPE TOWN STATEMENT ON GEOETHICS

International Association of Hydrogeologists supports the Cape Town Statement on Geoethics.
We wish to thank António Chambel, IAH President, and the colleagues of IAH Board for the decision taken during the IAH Executive Meeting in July 2017.
Currently the Cape Town Statement on Geoethics is supported by 18 Geoscience Organizations.
GEOETHICS AT THE EADI NORDIC CONFERENCE 2017

IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics is represented by Martin Bohle (IAPG Corresponding Citizen Scientist). 
He has been invited by Mundus Maris to speak to the panel "Small-Scale Fisheries between Tradition and Modernity – Addressing Poverty Alleviation, Food Security and Social Development through the Lens of Human Rights and Dignity." The panel will discuss implementation issues of the voluntary FAO guidelines for small-scale Fisheries.
IAPG was invited to "… further enrich [the discussions] by developments arising from researching and promoting geo-ethics in the Anthropocene, thus connecting the challenges and opportunities of small-scale fisheries with other global issues".
​Martin's contribution is entitled "Entangling Small-scale-Fisheries-Guidelines, Geoethics and Human Niche".

The IAPG call for abstracts was successfull, with 37 abstracts accepted: 30 orals and 7 poster presentations scheduled into 6 oral sessions and 1 poster session.

Moreover, IAPG has organized a panel session to discuss on several key topics of geoethics.

The aim of the Memorandum is to collaborate in the promotion of geoethics as an important consideration for all geoscientists, particularly emphasizing the role of geoethics in delivering sustainable development in low-income countries.

IAPG REPRESENTATIVES AT THE EFG-UNECE CONFERENCE
The Corresponding Citizen Scientists of the IAPG, Edmund Nickless and Martin Bohle, participate at the panel session "Socio-economic and environmental drivers for natural resources development and management" (Friday, 10 February, 15:30) at the EFG-UNECE Conference, co-organised by European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Title of the Conference: "International cooperation on natural resources - geoscientists' contribution to enhanced governance, policy making and attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals".
The conference is held in Brussels (Belgium) from 9 to 10 February 2017.

IAPG IS WORKING TO PROMOTE GEOETHICS IN JAPAN
 
IAPG in Japan supported a volunteers' conference, held on 28 January 2017 with students coming from several Japanese Universities, for the anniversary of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake.
In this conference, Megumi Sugimoto (on the right), IAPG Representative in Japan, delivered a speech on geoethics and its meaning in supporting disaster areas and disaster prevention activities in order to mitigate effects of future earthquakes.
The conference got a favorable coverage in 4 medias:
NHK TV news (https://www.facebook.com/marie.izumi.5/videos/1235021543242447/), Saga newspaper, Mainichi daily news and Nishi-Nippon newspaper (see pictures).
Moreover, IAPG supports the Future Earth symposium at Kyushu University on "Decision Science for Future Earth" (17-18 February 2017).
Megumi Sugimoto will present geoethics and IAPG activities.

A YOUNG GEOSCIENTIST FROM TANZANIA AWARDED 
with a grant for the session on geoethics at EGU 2017

Thanks to a donation by Martin Bohle (IAPG Corresponding Citizen Scientist), Athumani Amiry Sabuni (photo on the right), Tanzania Geological Society, won a grant for having submitted an abstract for the IAPG session on geoethics at the EGU General Assembly 2017, entitled "Geoethics – A Message from the Field in Tanzania". The grant will cover the APC - Abstract Processing Charge (Euros 40,00).

IAPG AND IYGU HAVE ESTABLISHED A PARTNERSHIP

IAPG is recognized as a global partner of IYGU - International Year of Global Understanding from 13 December 2016.

IYGU has been proclaimed by the International Councils of the Natural, Social, and Human Sciences: ICSU - International Council for Science, ISSC - International Social Science Council and CIPSH - International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences.

IYGU addresses the ways in which we inhabit an increasingly globalized world. IYGU connects local actions and global challenges, focuses on the global sustainability of local action, recognizes culturally different paths to global sustainability. IYGU addresses key United Nations Charter Constitution issues. It aims to strengthen international co-operation by preparing new strategies to face global challenges. The 2016 International Year of Global Understanding (IYGU) is based on an initiative of the International Geographical Union (IGU) that seeks support for its widespread implementation beyond the field of science.

She actively works to improve workplace climate issues and diversity in staff and leadership positions. She has been honored as CEO Update's CEO of the Year (2016), is an American Society of Association Executives Fellow and recipient of the Women Who Advance America award and received the America's Top Women Mentoring Leaders award in 2011 from Women of Wealth magazine. She serves on several medical institution’s boards of directors. Ms. McEntee holds a Master’s in Health Administration from The George Washington University, a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Georgetown University, and is a graduate of Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management Advanced Executive Program

NEW IAPG CCS ON "RISK COMMUNICATION"

Iain is professor of Geoscience Communication at Plymouth University and Director of its Sustainable Earth Institute. His long-standing research interests are in interdisciplinary investigations of geological hazards (earthquakes, volcanism, tsunamis) and abrupt environmental change, and more recently in the communication of ‘contested geoscience’ to the public. As part of his geo-communication he regularly presents Earth science programmes for BBC television, including Earth: The Power of the Planet; How Earth Made Us, How To Grow A Planet, The Rise of the Continents and, most recently, Planet Oil.

EDMUND NICKLESS (UK) IS THE 
NEW IAPG CCS ON "GEOETHICS FOR SOCIETY"

Until the end of September 2015 when he retired after 18 years service, Edmund Nickless was the Executive Secretary (Executive Director) of the Geological Society of London (GSL), the oldest national geological society in the world. Previously he held senior positions with the British Geological Survey (BGS) where he was for 29 years. Currently he is member of the Ethics Board of EPOS - The European Plate Observing System, a Research Infrastructure aims at creating a pan-European network for solid Earth science to support a safe and sustainable society. Moreover he is Councillor of the IUGS - International Union of Geological Sciences (2016-2020).
