Task Group on "Geoethics and Geoheritage"

 

Appointed on 26th October 2020 by the IAPG Secretary General

Goal

 

The goal of the Task Group is to draft a document on “Geoethics and Geoheritage”, on values and concepts to be considered within geoscience community and society as a whole, related to geoheritage, geodiversity, geoparks, and geotourism, accordingly to principles of responsibility and dignity, in the perspective of a human responsible development and nature conservation.

Members

 

José Brilha (Portugal)

He is a geologist and Full Professor at the University of Minho (Portugal). He develops research and teaching on geoheritage, protected areas and geoparks and is a member of the UNESCO Global Geopark Evaluation Team, of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and its Geoheritage Specialist Group and coordinator of the “Working Group Geoheritage Assessment” of the IUGS's “International Commission on Geoheritage”.

 

David W. Mogk (USA)

Professor of Geology and former Head of the Department of Earth Sciences, Montana State University. He is a metamorphic petrologist by training. He has worked in mineral exploration for precious, base and industrial minerals, and has also worked on environmental remediation of mine sites. For the past 25 years he has worked to promote excellence in geoscience education. For the past years he has led the initiative in the United States to promote Teaching Geoethics Across the Geoscience Curriculum.

Silvia Peppoloni (Italy)

PhD researcher at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (Rome, Italy); Founding member of the IAPG and Coordinator of the Section on Geoethics and Geological Culture of the Italian Geological Society. Councillor of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) for 2018-2022. Member of the Ethical Advisory Board of ICOS ERIC - Integrated Carbon Observation System. Member of the Executive Council of the Italian Section of the IAEG - International Association of Engineering Geology and the Environment. 

 

Giuseppe Di Capua (Italy) - Task Group Secretary

Geologist, technologist at the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia (Rome, Italy), Founding Member and Treasurer of the IAPG; Task Leader on ethical aspects in the European Horizon 2020 project ENVRI-Plus, and Team Leader of the Erasmus+ project GOAL–Geoethics Outcomes and Awareness Learning; Member of the International Advisory Board of the European projects INTERMIN-International Network of Raw Materials Training Centres and SMART EXPLORATION; Webmaster and Member of the Publications Committee of the IUGS-International Union of Geological Sciences; Member of the Executive Committee of the CIPSH - International Council for Philosophy and Human Sciences.
